ARCHIPELAGO
Archipelago started as a way to visualize the space that was not being "used" on a typical table. If we were to set up a coffee or dining table and paint the spots where plates, glasses, decor, magazine, etc. were placed throughout a week, we would find strong use patterns. Most likely, we would find a small percentage of surface that went unpainted. So, say, 95% of a table need to remain a surface for the daily use to be uninterrupted. That leaves a beautiful 5% of freedom for design.
This original thought experiment is also what formed the individual island shapes. due to the square or convex nature of items that we put on a table, the use patterns would develop into touching convex islands. Especially in the forest green shown above, this organic nesting pattern leads to a great lilypadding visual.
The Archipelago: Hardwood Series is cut from a single solid top. This way, the graining matches from island to island and any natural wood movement occurs consistently across the islands. Hardwood ash was chosen for several reasons. The color is modern and light while the graining is pronounced and aids in visual cohesion. Ash trees are being cut down across the U.S. due to the emerald ash borer, and it makes this important time to make use of this strong wood before it becomes a rare species.
The structure beneath the islands is designed to not interrupt the top-view floating visual. The supports only cross where the islands touch. The legs are tapered by hand from a square to a cylindrical foot to enhance the organic feel of the table.
Archipelago: Steel Series was created to see how far the floating visual could be pushed. The legs are significantly slimmer but are welded directly to the frame and islands to maintain strength and rigidity. The steel islands are also much slimmer, making them just their essential floating surfaces and nothing else. The frame remains supportive only where the islands touch.
Archipelago: Steel Series tables are coated in enamel paint: hunter green, primary yellow, or shrimp pink. Other colors are possible, however. Contact us for inquiries.
All items from the Hardwood Series and Steel Series are available for order on the shop page. All tables are made to order unless otherwise noted. Each design will be signed and numbered on the underside.
