This bench is made from a beautifully dense piece of oak that was calling for a nice stable design. The design process started with sketches of mission style benches but gradually shifted more and more towards subtle Japanese style angles, hence the name.

This commissioned daybed is designed for a living area, so the dimensions are perfect for lounging and reading or just extra guest seating. The armrest and side table make this a versatile design without it looking over-complicated or heavy. The carving is inspired by Southeast Asian geometric carvings. It wraps around all sides and brings a nice depth to the bed. The client is from Southeast Asia and was having a hard time finding a daybed that matched her aesthetic in the US. It turned out to be a special design and I’m tempted to make another for my own home.
